Detailed Analysis
______________
Johny Antony who debuted with the blockbuster comedy-caper 'CID Moosa' back in 2003 could succeed in producing back to back hits in the years to come, with a notable one being his initial collaboration with Megastar Mammootty 'Thurup Gulan'[2006] which was a run away hit at the Mollywood boxoffice back then. The combo tried their fortune twice down the line, but failed to repeat the success of the first as their subsequent releases 'Ee Pattanathil Bhootham'[2009] and 'Thappana'[2012] could do only pretty average business in their theatrical run.
The announcement of the return of the combo was not a big surprise as the duo is known to share good chemistry between each other. The well-cut teasers of the movie sky-rocketed the expectations, generating record youtube views for a malayalam movie in a short span of time.To release the movie along-side Mohanlal's much awaited magnum-opus 'Pulimurgan' was a brave decision from the makers which further increased the hype associated with this small-budget film.
If I am to summarize 'Thoppil Joppan' in a single word,I would unhesitatingly say Disappointing!! :( A half-baked entity right from the word go,'Thoppil Joppan' is an aimless collection of random jokes penned around a wafer-thin storyline that never really give Mammootty a platform to showcase his acting skills or the star charisma that was evident in his achayan roles in yesteryear films like ‘Kottayam Kunjachan’,‘Kizhakkan Pathrose’ and 'Nasrani'.
Johnny Antony is frequently critizized for his lazy handling of the screenplay and here even the writing by Nishad Koya falls on the same league and doesn't seem to turn serious at any point of the narration. The jokes does evoke laughs at times, but the ones which misfired were bigger in number and outweighed the good ones.A Hilarious sequence was the one where Joppan meets his prospective bride played by Arya Rohit.
After a pretty average first hour, the movie failed to keep the interest of viewers and turned dull with the progress of the narration. One can easily identify avoidable sub-plots such as the one involving Akshara Kishore and Meghanathan thats added to inculcate a message in the most forced and unconvincing manner.
Mammookka played the title role with ease, but I strongly believe its hard time he chose promising scripts rather than such poorly written stuffs.Andrea and Mamtha played their part convincingly.Jude Anthany Joseph was a big letback and looked struggling in handling the role invested on him.Sohan Seenulal was impressive with his one-line jokes.Among the supporting cast,Alencier Ley,Sreejith Ravi etc were good.Salim Kumar gave a decent performance eventhough not at this best.
Songs by Vidyasagar were good, but didn't make much impact in the narration. The song' Chill Chinjilamaay' was picturized very poorly in the most lazy way one can imagine. The cinematography by Sunoj Velayudhan was fine.Editing by Ranjan Abraham could have been sharp.
Overall,'Thoppil Joppan' is a lazily crafted flick with occasional laughs as a relief.
Notable Positives
__________
Few One-Liners Comparitively Better First Hour
Weak Links
__________
Lazy Narration Aimless Storyline Boring Second Half Unwanted Subplots
Final Verdict::Thoppil Joppan is yet another addition to the list of those half-baked feel-good movies without much to boast of except for few good moments of humor and a good performance from megastar Mammooty.Try it at your own risk!.
