Janatha Garage [Malayalam] Movie Review by Afsal

"An Intense Drama With Towering Performances From Mohanlal & Tarak "
Rating - 7/10 [★★★☆☆]

Detailed Analysis

Koratla Siva has managed to create a unique place for himself in the Tollywood industry with his well-narrated dramas Mirchi [2013] and Srimanthudu [2015] that triumphed in making it big at the Andhra & Telengana boxoffice.Janatha Garage that marked the union of Siva with Mollywood Superstar Mohanlal and Young Tiger Jr.NTR was expected to be a depthful family drama with enough scope for both the actors to showcase their acting talent once again on the Silver-screen.

I happened to watch the malayalam dubbed version of the same that's almost 20 minutes short from the uncut Telugu version, with two songs and few comedy sequences being trimmed off for making the feature more appealing to the Malayalam audience.First and formost I must appreciate the efforts taken by the team to present the malayalam version technically sound without any feel of being a dubbed movie as such. The fact that Mohanlal himself dubbed for his character Satya was a major plus and increased the impact of the intense characterization.

The movie started of promisingly with a well-etched flashback involving Mohanlal, and Koratla Siva succeeded in maintaining the momentum till the interval with his appealing narration that was backed by power-packed performances from both Mohanlal and NTR.The combination sequences involving the two was a delight to watch and a welcome change from Tollywood were other characters are usually sidelined by larger-than-life heroes.

The dialogues penned by Siva himself were powerful and hard-hitting.The emotional sequence involving Samantha and NTR,the initial confrontation between Mohanlal and NTR and the 'Pakka Local' item song featuring Kajal Aggarwal were the best part of the narration.

Inclusion of many environmental issues in the screenplay was notable and presented well. The action choreography by Anal Arasu was thrilling and well-presented.Leaving aside forced humor sequences was a big relief and appreciable considering the cliche formula of Telugu entertainers in the past.

The latter part of the second half, especially the conclusion was hurried and the stereotypical climax failed to make desired impact that one would expect by the course of the narration.Few repairs in the screenplay could have made Janatha Garage a memorable film, which sadly didn't happen.Lack of a convincing antagonist was evident and both the villains Sachin Khedekar and Unni Mukundan failed to qualify menacing in front of the mammoth screen presence of Mohanlal and NTR.

Coming to the performances,Siva can be proud of the fact that he could utilize the actors in Mohanlal and NTR to the fullest.Jr NTR who recently gave a noteworthy performance in Sukumar's Nannaku Prematho seems to be happy in choosing depthful roles unlike other mainstream Telugu heroes who sticks to over-the-top mass masala entertainers. The lead ladies Samantha and Nithya Menen did their part well even though their roles where over-shadowed by the male counterparts.Devayani,Rajeev Kanakala etc did their part well.Sachin Khedekar and Unni Mukundan couldnt make much impact.

The Background score and songs were matching the atmosphere and made necessary impact.Cinematography by noted Kollywood cameraman Thiru was good.Editing was Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao was fine.

Overall,Janatha Garage is an average family entertainer worth a watch from the big screens.
